The long answer: We love all things unique, something a little different, something a little special. We strive to find an eclectic mix of items with no boundary of style or era. We work hard to source these things from many different avenues and places and offer them collectively here to you in this little room in Marburg. Why the name.. The Black Museum?
The long story: It was around 35 years ago my father came to Marburg to start his antiques business, which began in the little room next door and over time grew into this very room and eventually extended further into the large shop on the corner of this street. He was doing something right..
Before opening the doors he was trying to think of a name for his business. He read something in the paper one morning, an article on Scotland Yard (The British Police Force). Him being a scotsman and the nature of his business, he put the word antiques at the end of it and the name stuck. Scotland Yard Antiques was born, and as mentioned it grew and grew.
A few years ago my sister took over the space just next doors specialising in coffee, plants and all things special for the garden. The name cleverly and naturally from our perspective had to be "Special Branch". Of course relating to the plants and garden aspect of the business and the fact Special Branch (the counter terrorism department) was an extension of Scotland Yard.
Now, having worked for my dad in his business for many years and having learned so much from him, I felt I was ready to do something for myself and my family. Gratefully I was allowed this space to do that.
Wanting to make this an eclectic space of unique items, my sister straight away said to me.. "I have the name". She then said the words "The Black Museum". Straight away I liked it and it stuck. This name continues the theme my Dad started 35 years ago and just seemed meant to be for this business.
The Black Museum for those who don't know is located at New Scotland Yard headquarters and it holds the collection of all the interesting artefacts, memorabilia and exhibits from past crimes.
So the Birnie Emporium keeps on growing.. And hopefully will continue to do so for another 30 years. We are all working together to offer you something different.
